A Look At Design And Camera Facilities On The Samsung Galaxy S2 And The Galaxy S Advance

The Samsung Galaxy range of mobile smartphones seems to be growing all of the time and the latest addition to the family is the new Galaxy S Advance. Previously we took a look at screen technology and processing power on this device and looked at how it compared with the bestselling Samsung Galaxy S2. This time we look at camera features on both of these models and also see how the models compare in terms of design.

The new Samsung Galaxy S Advance features an improved camera facility from the Galaxy S model that it is based on. Still photography quality is impressive and images can be captured at a resolution of 5 million pixels. As you would expect a wealth of additional features are available to help you capture the highest quality images possible. Auto focus will help ensure that there is minimal blur on any photos and the useful Smile Detection function will take the photograph the moment it detects people smiling. Thanks to the phone incorporating GPS all photographs can also have location details stored about where the snaps were taken.

Despite the Galaxy S Advance offering a high quality camera feature the Samsung Galaxy S2 offers a little more in terms of quality in this area. An 8 mega pixel camera captures an incredible quality of image although many of the additional features are the same as can be found on the Advance model. Both handsets offer a secondary front facing camera which is ideal for video calls and both are also capable of capturing still images. The Galaxy S2 can record 2 mega pixel resolution from this camera while the Galaxy S Advance offers just 1.3 mega pixels.

One of the key areas on modern smartphones is design. A great looking device will always grab the attention of the consumer while a more dated design will often be overlooked. The Galaxy range of devices are famous for their stylish looks and both of these handsets do not disappoint in this area. The Galaxy S Advance looks very similar to the original Galaxy S device. The handset measures 123.2 x 63 x 9.7mm which makes the phone one of the most compact currently available.

At just 120 grammes in weight the model is also surprisingly lightweight considering it includes a 4 inch display. Although the Samsung Galaxy S2 includes a larger 4.3 inch screen the phone manages to weigh less than the Advance model at just 116 grammes. The model measures just 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5mm and is constructed from some very durable plastic. This black plastic gives the phone a very modern look which combines well with the curved corners of the phone to leave us with a device that may not win any awards for innovation but still looks superb.

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance is a superb addition to the Galaxy range and will strike a chord with consumers looking for great value for money. The Samsung Galaxy S2 is still the premium model in the range and offers superior camera features and excellent design despite its advancing age.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is available now and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is coming soon.

Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II GSM Smartphone 16 GB 8 MP Camera Android WiFi GPS

The Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II is an upgrade to Samsung's already popular Galaxy smartphone line. The main improvements are in the display and in the operating system software which has been optimized to maximize the use of each processor in the dual-core 1Ghz microprocessor that drives the Galaxy.

One key upgrade that Galaxy users will notice right away is the amount of built-in memory, where the former Galaxy came with 8 GB of built-in system memory that could be expanded to 32, the Galaxy S II is equipped with 16 GB from the outset. This means the Galaxy S II can handle more sophisticated applications right from the box. One can add 16 GB or memory on a superSD card for a total of 32 GB easily.

Another key feature is the size. The Galaxy S II is incredibly light, at 4.2 ounces. It is also thin at 0.3 inches and it is 2.6 inches deep. The screen is huge at 4.9 inches and the newly released superAMOLED Plus touchscreen display delivers a more brilliant range of colors than the superAMOLED display that was standard on the Galaxy. For example, greens, reds and blues are more brilliant while the hues for each of those main colors is also brighter. The SuperAMOLED Plus screen also delivers better contrast so that blacks are richer and whites are brighter. This, in turn, leads to text that is easier to read so that if you are using your Galaxy S II for work, you will find your memos are much more visible. Further, texts that you create, whether memos or quick messages, will be easier to read and create.

The superAMOLED Plus lens color palette also allows you to view streaming colors more vividly and, if you watch movies or play games on your Galaxy S II, you will find that the colors each mode is enhanced. The superAMOLED Plus screen operates at high-definition resolution of 800 by 400. It is also equipped with two cameras an 8 MP autofocus rear camera that delivers video at high-definition's native resolution 1080 p at 30 frames per second. It is also equipped with a front 2MP camera that allows enhanced videoconferencing or chatting. The Galaxy S II has 410 minutes of talk time or 610 hours of standby time.

Driven by the Android operating system, as was its predecessor, the Galaxy S II has access to more than 200,000 user-written applications that range from simple apps to complex editors and more. It is apparent from using the Galaxy S II that the base system software - the software that runs under the operating system and makes the Galaxy S II a phone and not just a collection of circuits - has been optimized to take advantage of the two CPUs available in the dual-core microprocessor. This means that you can multitask easily and that when both CPUs are dedicated to the same task, as in when you are gaming, for example, the Galaxy S II is speedier.

Part of that speed, though, comes from the fact that this network-centric device recognizes all of the major 802.11 WiFi standards a/b/g/n. When the Galaxy S II is operating on an HSPA + network, it runs at 21 Mbps, while HSUPA networks allow speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps. So, if each CPU stream is optimized for a specific recognized mode, and each processor is running at that speed, then your network speed will be far faster than you expect.

With a universe of nearly 200,000 apps available, one will find the Galaxy S II can be a useful business or gaming tool. One should find that it is an excellent upgrade that is lighter, quicker and capable.

The Phantom v1610 camera shoots videos at 1,000,000 fps

Vision Research's Phantom v1610 high-speed digital camera shoots 1 million fps videos

Image Gallery (4 images)

Vision Research has revealed the latest addition to its line of digital high-speed cameras, in the form of the Phantom v1610. It shoots videos at an impressive speed of 16,000 fps, at a resolution of 1280 x 800. However, if the number of pixels is reduced to just 128 x 16, the speed can be increased to a whopping 1 million frames recorded every second. While that's less than the X-ray camera that shoots at 4.5 million fps, the Phantom v1610 is not a scientific one-of-a-kind device.

The company is already known for its Phantom Flex camera that was introduced last year, and is capable of capturing Full HD (1920 x 1080) videos at 2,800 fps. While the v1610's maximum resolution is "only" 1280 x 800 pixels, its standard speed is significantly higher. The frame rate of 1 million fps is available via an optional FAST feature which is implemented on request, while without FAST it's as high as 600,000 fps at the lowest resolution.

Utilizing Vision Research's proprietary widescreen CMOS 35.8 x 22.4 mm sensor, the Phantom v1610 can save footage at the speed of 16 gigapixels per second (for comparison, Phantom Flex's throughput is 6 gigapixels/second). The sensor's pixel size is 28 microns with 12-bit depth per pixel.

The camera comes with 24GB, 48GB, or 96GB of internal RAM, while it's also compatible with the non-volatile Phantom CineMag storage system - it features up to 512 GB of capacity, which reportedly makes it easier and faster to save and download footage.

The Phantom v1610's features include:

Android app lets you remotely control a DSLR camera

The DSLR Controller Android app allows users to remotely control a Canon DSLRImage Gallery (4 images)

Apps can often expand the capabilities of a smartphone far beyond its basic use, for instance, enabling the device to serve as a DSLR remote controller. While the idea itself is not particularly new, such a program hasn't been yet available for Android devices. Although still in the development phase, the DSLR Controller app has already been made available for download through Android Market, priced at US$8.51.

For now, the program works with USB-on-the-go-enabled devices only, as well as with Canon EOS DSLRs, while a laptop or any other computer is not required. Its developer, going by the nickname "Chainfire," has tested the app utilizing the Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone and Motorola Xoom tablet, as well as the Canon EOS 550D, 50D, 7D, 5D mk II, 1D mk IV cameras.

DSLR Controller features a live view transmitted from the camera at around 15 fps. There are also lots of on-screen controls, offering options that can be found in the camera such as shutter control, white balance, aperture, exposure compensation, ISO speed, zoom control, and focus. The range of available options depends on the mode the camera is currently set to. All features are operated simply by tapping the screen.

Features like video support, timelapse, scripting, image review and transfer are in the works and will be added in the future, according to Chainfire.

The following video presents the DSLR Controller app in beta version running on a Samsung Galaxy S2:
