The Blackberry 8520 Unlocked Phone is a the newest in the series of this line from RIM and AT&T. Indeed, the GSM phone is a quad-band device, working on the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 GHz frequency bands as well as GPRS. The GSM phone is compatible with AT+T and T-Mobile, but not with other networks. For example, Sprint, Alltel and Verizon employ CDMA technology and the Blackberry 8520 is not compatible with it. As a phone, its performance is fine. There are no dropped calls and no drop-outs. AT+T boasts one of the most comprehensive networks available. Interestingly, the 8520 also supports WiFi's 802.11g standard which makes this phone compatible with hotspots across the country. It also makes it compatible with many older home routers so that you can surf the web via WiFi if you are not near on of AT+T's nodes.

The Blackberry 8520 features a full backlit QWERTY keyboard. This enables the 8520 to work naturally and easily with texting and messaging. The small keys do not lend themselves to touch-typing, but, the layout is similar to standard keyboard on laptops and desktops. It is separate from the 2.46-inch high-resolution display which features 320 by 240 resolution and up to 65,000 colors.

The 8520 is a slim device. It is 4.3 inches long by 2.4 inches wide and half-an-inch thick and weighs 3.7 ounces. It is not a cumbersome to handle. Its RIM-based operating system does have a somewhat limited set of apps, but that is growing. Also, you can transfer favored apps between Blackberry devices. It comes equipped with 2GB of memory that can be upgraded to 4 GB. One notable feature is the 8520's Trackpad. Using the Trackpad, you can quickly navigate through either icons or menus and find the app you are seeking. The Trackpad lets you use one finger to scroll through menus and icons. Once the app you are seeking is located, it takes a single tap to access it.

The 8520 features a full range of audio and video formats. For audio, it supports AAC-LC, AAC, eAAC, AMR-NB, WMA9 (.wma/.esf), WMA9 Pro/WMA10 and AAC-LC through a 3.5mm headset. For video, it supports MPEG4, H.263, H.264 and WMV3. The 8520's controls let you listen to a full range of audio and if a calls comes in, the audio can be paused and the call can be taken and finished. When ready, the 8520 is simply starts to play where it was paused.

Equipped with a single lithium-ion battery, the 8520 has 5 hours of continuous talk time or can be left in standby mode for 17 days. The addition of a full 2 MP camera is fine as the images it takes are good. The only limit to the amount of video you can take is the onboard memory storage.
