The Sony Xperia S - Sony's Attempt to Recapture the Smartphone Market

The Japanese and Swedish smartphone venture Sony Ericsson has just announced its earnings for 2011. The partnership announced losses totaling to 247 million euro (approximately $267 million or £173 million). Now that the Japanese tech giant has purchased its Swedish partner's shares, it is planning to get back in the game. It launched the XPERIA S this year at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2012 last January. Finally, the company now has a smartphone that can compete with the bigger fish in the market.

In the past, the smartphone maker has created a number of sound Android devices such as the XPERIA Play and the XPERIA Arc S. However, they are simply outmatched by the flagships other manufacturers have to offer. Samsung launched its highly popular dual-core handset the Galaxy S2. HTC has done the same with its Sensation. Apple soon followed with its most powerful handset to date with the iPhone 4S. Sony Ericsson's handsets were simply left far behind.

Now that the company is purely Japanese-owned, they are planning to make their mark with their next generation Android smartphones. This has become evident in the XPERIA S.

The handset is unlike any other handset in the company's roster. Like most of the flagships in the market today, it packs a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor under the hood. This is even more powerful, compared to the 1.2 GHz dual-core processor found within the Galaxy S2. It is as powerful as the HTC Sensation XE that comes with the same CPU.

When it comes to camera sensors, this Android device will not disappoint. It comes with a 12 megapixel rear-facing primary camera that can record videos at 1080p. This makes the smartphone only one of two smartphones in the market to sport megapixel counts of this amount. The only other smartphone with a camera as powerful is Nokia's N8. Sony's new smartphone also comes with a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video calls. It can record videos at 720p.

Of course, one reason why people choose to get smartphones is not just all about hardware but looks as well. The XPERIA S definitely does not fall short when it comes to form factor. It sports a sleek and smooth look with a transparent band found on the bottom.

Sony has a lot riding on this new smartphone as well as their new releases this 2012. With the XPERIA, Sony plans to recapture the smartphone market.

The Best (and Mostly FREE) of the Android Market

My first smart phone arrived in the mail on Wednesday: Virgin Mobiles Optimus V. I've played with it, studied up on it, and am in love already! To think they fit so much power and functionality into a cute little package at an affordable price (after coupon code and rebate I'm paying about 99.00 for the phone)! Technology is growing so rapidly it's incredible!

But for now I thought I'd share my favorite free apps in my new Droid experience, plus one that is worth a small fee.

1) Netflix- because it's cool and I can watch Prison Break while I drink my free coffee refill at McDonald's.

2) GrooveIP- Who doesn't want to turn their unactivated smart phone into a free VOIP for just 4.99?

3) Double Twist- So I can transfer my iTunes music to an Android device!

4) Pandora-I enjoy being able to carry free custom music stations around with me.

5) Flashlight- It turns your phone's display into a flashlight!

6) Astrid Tasks- This is for making and organizing lists. Goodbye to the days of making a grocery list, only to leave it at home!

7) Dolphin Browser- I like the tabs function, favorites and bookmark features

8) Translate- This amazing app translates to and from many languages. You can type or speak the phrase you want to translate and then read or play audio of the translation! I have used this at work to communicate with clients who speak Spanish, as I am not fluent.

9) Daily Bible- You can get daily devotionals, read straight through or search by keyword. I wish it was available for free as a download!

10) Puzzle Star- It's a Tetris style game, which came in handy while I waiting in the doctors office today! It is a download so I was able to use it even without an internet connection.

11) Kindle for Android- This is a great way to maximize your smart phones value. Instead of buying two devices for your reading and talking you can have it all in the palm of your hand. There are even free books available to read. Or take the 79.00-199.00 you can save on a Kindle and buy your favorite books!

There is an endless supply of new, clever and practical Android Market apps out there. Surely I will have a new list to share soon.

Let's debunk the notion that eating well and staying fit has to cost more than poor diet and health. We can both improve our healthy and diet while saving money at the same time!

I welcome you to follow along in my journey and celebrate with me when I reach my goal- to be half the woman I once was and twice as fit!

Top Rated Smartphones on the Market Today

Getting Started

When you think of smartphones, three brand names and three Operating Systems come to mind. The brands include BlackBerry, iPhone and HTC. The BlackBerry of course uses the BlackBerry OS, The iPhone uses the Mac OS and the HTC smartphones are generally operated on the Android OS.

Each of the smartphones has their pros and cons and while I am a BlackBerry fan at heart, there have been some recent releases across each platform that has gotten my attention. Apple has just released the iPhone 4S and BlackBerry has released its Torch 2 in addition to a new Bold and a Curve. HTC is constantly releasing new mobile devices with each one a little better than its predecessor, which already had enough features to suit the everyday business person as well as smartphones enthusiasts.

The BlackBerry Torch 2 or BlackBerry Torch 9860

The new BlackBerry Torch features a touchscreen interface which has made it a favorable upgrade from the previous bulky slide up Torch. It has upgraded a few features to go with its new design and now facilitates the pinch and zoom features as well. The new Torch is being constantly compared with the new iPhone 4 S because they were released at approximately the same time with similar features and their parent companies are rivals. The Torch 2 or Torch 9860 features the promising BlackBerry OS 7 which bares some resemblance to that of the iPhone's user interface. They are both touch screen devices but some options of the BlackBerry Torch requires button input.

HTC and Other Mobiles

HTC has released quite a few mobile phones within the past few months, most if not all have been smart phones, but some persons might refer to a few of them as feature phones instead. Some of the latest releases include the HTC Radar, the HTC Titan and the HTC sensation 4G. Motorola and Samsung is also in the smart phone race with the Droid phones and the popular Samsung Galaxy that has been upgraded and re-released at least twice; most recently, the Samsung Galaxy S 2.

Making a Smart Choice

If you are looking for a smartphone, whether to manage your files and emails, to engage in better multimedia entertainment or simply to impress your friends, you should consider getting a mobile from one of the listed brands in the aforementioned paragraphs. However you should keep in mind that not all cell phones are the same even if they are made by the same manufacturer, so you should pay attention to the smartphone's design, user interface, features and overall performance.

If you are in the market for smartphones or you just need additional information. You should ensure that you have an easy to locate resource for both. You can always find the latest information and purchase links for smartphones at http://www.smartphonedeal.com/

Pierre Cardin has designs on tablet market with PC-7006 Tablet PC

The Pierre Cardin PC-7006 tablet with 'tasteful case'Image Gallery (3 images)

As the number of Android tablets from lesser known electronics companies proliferate it's no surprise to see companies not exactly known for their electronic device offerings looking to horn in the market. Fashion label Pierre Cardin has launched a 7-inch tablet computer the company claims is "the UK's first designer tablet PC." What makes a designer tablet you ask? Apparently a "tasteful case" featuring a metallic Pierre Cardin logo and an "uber-cool black gift box."

The Pierre Cardin PC-7006 Tablet PC isn't the fashion house's first entry into the mobile electronics arena, with the 7-inch PC729 and 8.9-inch PC819 appearing in 2010. Both ran Windows 7 and were powered by VIA's C7-M processors, which meant a less than stellar battery life of around 2.5 hours. However, powered by a Samsung Cortex A8 1 GHz processor, the new PC-7006 should do better in this regard.

Instead of the tablet-oriented Android 3.x, the unit runs version Android 2.2 (Froyo) and comes with 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded via a Micro SD slot supporting cards up to 16 GB. The capacitive multi-touch 7-inch display packs 800 x 480 pixel resolution and connectivity options include 802.11 b/g and 3G. Like the Archos G9, however, 3G connectivity requires the purchase of an external 3G dongle that connects to the unit's mini USB port.

There's also an HDMI port, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and 720P HD video playback capabilities. The unit measures 19.5 x 12.3 x 1.4 cm (7.6 x 4.8 x 0.5 in) and weighs 520 g (1.14 lb).

So, aside from the Pierre Cardin logo on the case, there isn't really anything that sets the unit apart from other middling tablet offerings. However, if things like logos and "uber cool" black gift boxes are important to you, the Pierre Cardin PC-7006 is available here for GBP275 (approx. US$447).
