iPhone 4, 4S Color Change: 3 Mistakes You Can Avoid

The iPhone 4 is black or white.

So you decide to take it out into the night and find someone to change the color, if the price is right - but what else should you know? Chances are good you're going to find an independent shop to change the color of your iPhone. We repair iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Here are 3 mistakes you can avoid.

Mistake # 1: Should you pay extra for OEM parts?

NO! First, what does OEM mean? It means Original Equipment Manufacturer. In other words, it means the parts were made by the company that made the original parts. What company would that be? Apple. Do you know Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple?

We recently listened to the Steve Jobs biography. Steve would never allow any of his parts suppliers to sell parts to anyone but Apple.

Mistake # 2: Where are iPhones and iPhone parts made?

All iPhone parts are from mainland China. Don't let anyone tell you their parts are made in the USA. We order our parts directly from China. After testing many suppliers, we have settled on one which provides parts just like the originals, down to the smallest detail. However, not all Chinese parts suppliers are as good. In our search for our current supplier, we were amazed at the bad fit of some of the parts from other Chinese suppliers.

The bottom line about parts?

The shop you pick should have an owner and / or technicians with iPhones, and one or more of these will have had the color changed, by changing the parts. Ask to handle one or more. Check for fit and finish by comparing those iPhones to your black or white iPhone. If you're happy with the fit and finish, chances are good you'll be happy with your phone after they change the parts. NOTE: If your iPhone is a Verizon phone, your color selection may be limited.

Mistake # 3: Don't pre-buy your parts, and check out your technician.

It may be tempting to buy the parts on the Amazon or elsewhere. Please don't. You need for the shop that will change the parts to have responsibility for the whole show.

Please check out the shop that will be doing the work. Check Google Places, and yelp. The shop you use should be a 4 Star at either place. If they are 3 Star at one, but 4 Star at the other, you're probably OK. It is extremely hard for small repair businesses to maintain ratings higher than this. Why? It is because there are enough people with other problems, running around in this society, who make it very difficult.

What should you do now?

iPhone Repair: How Can You Avoid A Disaster?

How good is the insurance you may have with your iPhone?

It may be very good. However, in 99% of cases, the insurance will not cover broken screen-glass which is the most common repair needed. If you find yourself with a broken glass, and now you're using your iPhone through the cracks, and you have just been quoted an almost obscene price to repair it, please stop, take a deep breath and consider some options.

1. You can simply pay the price being asked by the manufacturer.

If you take this route, you will be paying an amount of money roughly equal to the value of your used phone, in many cases. A better option may be to simply buy a used iPhone from someone who deals in used phones. Be sure to get a warranty covering parts and labor of at least 10 days, if you do this.

How will find a used iPhone? Your best bet is to search Craigslist. It may be tempting to buy from an individual. If you do, meet them in a very public place with good lighting, such as in front of a police station. A safer option may be to find a reputable iPhone repair shop which has a used iPhone for sale. A real shop will offer a real warranty including parts and labor for a period of at least 10 days, and up to 90 days.

How will you know the shop is reputable? Google the shop. Check Yelp and Yahoo. Ask the shop for 3 references. You should find over-whelming positive results. If you come across a negative review or two, remember, no one is perfect (provided there are a lot of positive reviews with the negatives). Once you find the right shop, they should give you a credit for your old phone.

2. You can fix it yourself.

How? You'll find instructional videos online. Please be very careful. In many cases, the person who made the video of the repair would like to sell you the parts for a lot more than they are worth. For example, the glass for the 3G and 3GS is less than $5 at true wholesale prices. Should you pay $25 or $35 for the same part, probably not. In the case of the iPhone 4, some people are selling the glass alone. They don't tell you the glass (which is the digitizer) is normally bonded to the LCD. Even if you can get the broken glass off your LCD, you cannot make a proper repair. The only way is by buying the iPhone 4 or 4S digitizer and LCD as one unit.

Very few people are able to repair the iPhone 4 after watching a video. New technicians learn while being watched by an experienced technician for eight weeks. The iPhone 4 interior is packed with delicate connectors. Make one wrong move and you no longer have a phone - you'll have a paper weight because it is so easy to damage the mother board, which is the heart of the phone. There are 18 screws to remove. Each must go back in the right place. If one screw is placed wrong, the phone won't work. The 3G and the 3GS models are easier, but you can still destroy your iPhone with one false move.

3. You can probably find a local or mail-away independent repair person or shop.

If you take the precautions mentioned earlier, chances are good you'll find a reputable person who is interested in your repeat and referral business. Be bold. Ask questions like, how many repairs have you done? Go to the shop. If, upon seeing the shop in person and talking in person, you get cold feet, run. Your intuition is probably right. The consequences of letting the wrong person into your phone are too big.

If there is not a real and reliable shop close to you, consider mailing your iPhone to a reliable shop for repair. Be sure to use a shop who's mail service is predictable, fast, affordable, and guaranteed. How long will you have to be without your phone? The shop you select should be able to guarantee your repaired phone to be back in your hands in five days from the day you put it in the mail, provided the shop is in the same state, and they should guarantee this by using first class mail. Watch out for large fees for fast shipping.

Is it worth it to be careful?

You know it is. Your phone is so much more than just a phone these days. It is worth the time it takes to send your iPhone to the right place. Be aware of games. Some shops may appear to have a low labor price while charging too much for parts. Another may seem to have a low total price, only to overcharge for shipping.

What should you do next?

You'll find many questions answered at our blog: http://www.iphoneanddroidrepair.com/. 5 Mobile Marketing Blunders To Avoid in 2012

Mobile marketing has become an indispensable strategy for entrepreneurs to grow businesses. The Mobile Marketing Association says advertising spending will jump to $5 billion by 2015. Besides that, text usage is growing, with 8 trillion text messages projected to be sent in 2011. These facts together with the growing mobile penetration now standing more than 70% makes use of mobile devices a resource one cannot ignore. Indeed, a number of marketers are making big gains using cell phones as a marketing tool. However, many are losing money because of these five blinders.

1. Ignoring to know the phone types customers have.

The type of phones your clients have is important knowledge that gives you a big marketing head start. Its helps tailor the marketing approach for people with smart phones and those with standard phones. A simple survey can give you this knowledge. In addition, public domain information can help you make intelligent decisions.

2. Failing to understand how people use their phones.

When you know how people use their phones you avoid irritating your clients. For instance, some people like text over voice. Others use their phones to check emails and surf the net. In addition, there are people who don't take calls beyond a certain time in the night. When you go against people's set traditions or preferences, you will annoy them and alienate yourself from them

3. Doing a campaign without a call to action.

Mobile marketing, unlike TV or newspaper marketing give users a chance to be spontaneous. The fact that users have their handset with them most of the time makes it better. Tell people what to do and let your marketing always have a call to action. It is always prudent to send SMS that has clear instructions to users.

4. Postponing creating a mobile version of your website.

A mobile website is important. It gives one a marketing edge; because your site can be read with people with smart phone devices. In addition, mobile searches give priority to local mobile websites. Meaning that your company website will come tops which a big marketing advantage.

5. Giving opt in low priority.

Nothing is as important as a mobile phone list. Your company can only survive in the long run if it is continuously building a mobile list. When people opt in, they give you consent to send them marketing messages. With advertising cost skyrocketing, marketing to your list is the best move one can ever make.
