Hundreds and thousands of people got deeply disappointed when they did not see the anxiously anticipated iPhone 5 released on October 4th 2011. iPhone 4S was introduced instead. Naturally, all sorts of questions started floating. Will there be an iPhone 5? When will it arrive? What will it be like?
There are no official answers to these questions from Apple. However, rumors do not stop circulating. The most persistent question is whether iPhone 5 exists. What one of the leading Apple rumor sites, 9to5Mac, says is that the development of both iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 was simultaneous. Both were projected to premiere on October 4th. The former device was supposed to have the traditional design and the new iOS 5 platform integrated. The latter was supposed to have a completely new design and brand new features like A5 processor plus iOS beta with Siri.
What are these rumors based on? 9to5Mac says they learned this from interviews with Apple employees. Another piece of evidence which suggests that the development of iPhone 5 was way under way is that the Chinese manufacturers released teardrop shaped cases for the new device. Supposedly, these were based on the prototype which leaked from Foxconn. The prototype indicated that the new device will have unique thinner teardrop design.
What happened? Why did not the iPhone 5 get released? According to rumors, the development of iPhone 5 was not going as smoothly as expected and was not on schedule. Apparently, it was proving quite difficult for all the new and improved software and hardware features in particular to be integrated into the thin design with teardrop shape. The executives of the company did not want to risk mass unit production due to their fears that not enough units would be produced by the holiday season 2011.
Due to the technical and production difficulties, the company decided to pack iPhone 4S with all or at least most of the features that were supposed to come with the other device. That way, only 4S was released on October 4th. Apparently, Apple decided that the new features of this model would be appealing enough to customers and that they would satisfy the expectations people had about the 5 model.
The main question still remains - will there be iPhone 5 and when? According to rumors, the development of this gadget is way under way now. 9to5Mac says that according to their sources the release of the smart phone is expected in the summer of 2012.
