Sony launching Android tablet

The 16GB version of the tablet will sell for $500 and the 32 GB version for $600. Sony

Sony has started taking orders for its first tablet, which goes on sale in September.


The Sony Tablet S, a 9.4-inch touch-screen tablet that runs Google's Android 3.1 operating system, is available for pre-sale starting Wednesday, the company announced in a news release.


The tablet, unveiled in April, is designed to easily send videos to Sony TVs and music to Sony wireless speakers. It also provides built-in access to a range of Sony network entertainment services:

A new Sony movie service called Video Unlimited that allows people to rent or buy video.PlayStation games.The Sony Reader store, which offers e-book sales.A picture and video-sharing service called Personal Space.

The device uses an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, the same one that powers the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, and includes features now standard on most tablets, such as front and rear cameras.


The 16GB version will sell for $500 and the 32 GB version for $600.


Sony did not say Wednesday what its plans were for a smaller, folding version of the tablet called the S2 that was also announced in April.
